3 Powerful Reasons To Stop Smoking

by Patrick G. Moore

Smokers are everywhere. You can see them on the streets, at pubs and even at home, if you have a family member who smokes. The thing about smoking is that not only it harms the smoker but the people around the smoker too.

These people are non-smokers around the smokers. Indirectly, the non-smokers will involuntarily inhale the smoke from the cigarettes. These non-smokers are known as passive smokers. They don’t smoke but only inhale the smoke from a smoker. Smoker, you are putting other people in danger too.

A passive smoker has a higher risk of getting smoke related health issues such as lung cancer. A study shows that passive smokers are likely to die earlier than the smokers. This seems absurd, but this is the truth so smokers, please take note, you are not only killing yourself but others too.

The problem however is wider than we thought. First, you as a smoker put yourself into a situation that is not supposed to happen. If you develop cancer, what happened to your family? They will have to fork out their savings to pay for your treatments and you will suffer and perhaps bedridden. You have given a burden to your family.

That is not just it. You are putting your family in danger as when you smoke, the inhale your cigar’s smoke. This cause them to have higher risk to develop cancer too. Is this what you want?

Another issue about smoking is, do you realised kids like to imitate adults, as the same as mimicking. They see you smoking and they might start to pick up any sticks or pencils to mimic you smoking out of fun. However, as they grow older, it is not fun anymore. They might do it for real. By that time, what is the point of regret? You might wish that you never smoke from the beginning but as your child pick up your skills, it is very difficult to stop them because they will in return, answer this, “You smoke too! Don’t teach us what to do.”

There are many ways to stop smoking, but only if you have the will and determination to do it. You cannot stop smoking in one day as it takes time, but at least you take the first step and I am sure you have higher chance to success in stop smoking. Addiction to Nicotine

When you smoke, soon you will be addicted to nicotine. It is when you have addicted to nicotine that makes quit smoking seems so hard. There is no way you can quit smoking unless you have a strong determination and work hard towards achieving your goal. That is to say, you need to put in a lot of effort in achieving success when you are on a quit smoking program.

There are a few ways to get rid of the addiction and some of the ways are harder than the others.

Nicotine Replacement

This is also known as NRT. There are many nicotine replacement therapy available such as nicotine patch, nicotine gum and even nicotine spray. All the NRT being sold in US is approved by the FDA so there is nothing much to worry about except to focus on quit smoking. NRT is to help you get out of the addiction slowly.

You can quit smoking cold turkey but for the next few months you will be suffering the withdrawal symptoms and soon you will find yourself lighting another cigarette. NRT helps by supplying certain dosage of nicotine into your body without you smoking. Within weeks or months, you will be able to feel the difference of not having to depend on nicotine anymore.

Behavioural Treatments

This treatment is through the process of creating smoke free environment, support from friends and family, telephone counselling, face-to-face counselling and many other supportive ways.

This is because smokers need to understand his/her own behaviours of smoking and learn how to curb the temptations. If the smoker is strong and determined, he/she will be able to achieve success in quit smoking. However, counter wise, some people failed because without the help and support they needed, they can’t go far.

Addiction to nicotine is something you need to fight on your own. People can help by teaching you and guiding you on the steps to quit smoking but in the end it is totally about you whether you can do it or not. To achieve success in stop smoking, have a strong determination and remember you quit smoking for your own good and for the people you love as well.

Do you think it’s ok to smoke during pregnancy?

Why do some women feel like it’s right to smoke during there pregnancy? They say that it is too hard to quit so they just “cut down”…

Isn’t your baby your #1 priority and wouldn’t be pregnant actually make you quit cold turkey regardless how hard it was for the well being of your unborn baby?

Apart from smoking’s well-known dangers to anyone, such as increased risk for heart disease and cancer, women who smoke during pregnancy are at greater risk for giving birth to low-birthweight babies.

On average, babies born to women who smoked during pregnancy are significantly smaller than those born to women who don’t smoke. Low birthweight is one of the main causes of infant illness and disability, and of stillbirth.

The evidence that cigarette smoking may have other harmful effects on the fetus is more controversial, but some problems associated with smoking include ectopic pregnancy (where the fertilised egg implants outside the womb), miscarriage, premature labour and birth, placental abruption, vaginal bleeding, and cot death.

Some studies have shown that smoking during pregnancy may harm a child’s mental development and behaviour, leading to a short attention span and hyperactivity. Other research shows that certain birth defects may be more common in babies whose mother smoked during pregnancy. For example, a number of studies have shown a strong link between smoking in pregnancy and babies born with a cleft lip and/or palate.

The further into pregnancy you smoke, the greater your risk of complications. For example, if a pregnant woman stops smoking during the first half of her pregnancy, her baby will most likely be born a normal weight. If she continues to smoke throughout the pregnancy, she’ll probably have a low-birthweight baby. So if you’re a smoker and have not succeeded in quitting so far, stopping now, or at the very least cutting down on the number of cigarettes you smoke a day, can still benefit you and your baby.

Many women find they need help to give up or cut down. Talk to your midwife or doctor. They’ll be able to give you help and advice, and put you in touch with your local stop-smoking support scheme.Call the free and confidential NHS Pregnancy smoking helpline on 0800 169 9169. It’s staffed by trained counsellors who know how hard it is to quit, and who will listen and offer support and advice. Alternatively, you can contact www.quit.org.uk, an independent charity which also offers free phone counselling to help you quit.
