Zyban - A Drug To Help Quit Smoking

Have you heard of Zyban? Zyban is a brand name for a generic drug known as bupropion hydrochloride. Another brand name that is coined to this drug is Wellbutrin. I must stress that this drug is not for everyone. Not all can consume this drug because of the side effects. However, one good point is that by using this drug, you will be able to cope with nicotine withrawal better. Besides, you will be able to avoid weight gain.

If you have tried other methods and still not manage to quit smoking successfully, you should consider this.

Originally, this drug is marketed as an anti depressant and it is only available through prescription. The researchers find that while smokers use the drug to treat depression, the smokers are also losing interest at smoking, which lead to the usage of Zyban in quit smoking.

If you combine Zyban with NRT, the results would be excellent. You will be able to quit smoking at ease. However, beware of the side effects:

  • dry mouth
  • dizziness
  • insomnia
  • change in appetite
  • agitation
  • headaches

These are the identified side effects for Zyban. As Zyban is not suitable for everyone, you should consult your physician before you consume Zyban.

DO NOT take Zyban if:

  • You are taking Wellbutrin or Wellbutrin SR (both are bupropion HCl)
  • You are taking any other medicine containing bupropion HCl
  • You have or have had a seizure disorder
  • You have or have had an eating disorder
  • You are abruptly discontinuing use of alcohol or sedatives(including benzodiazepines)
  • You are currently taking or have recently taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor(MAOI)
  • You are allergic to bupropion HCl
  • You are pregnant or nursing.

Be sure to follow the guidelines and if you have any doubts, please consult your doctor immediately. This is meant to be a guideline not a prescription.

Distract Yourself From Cigarettes

Take your mind off smoking when you are going to quit smoking. The only thing that can help to distract you away from cigarettes is to get busy. When you are busy doing something, often you will forget the needs for smoking and therefore stop smoking.

There are many activities you can do to take your mind away from smoking. If you are interested in gardening why not spend your time in the garden and tending to your plants and flowers. You can also try to plant some vegetables and the best thing is you get to spend time doing something great rather than just smoking and in the end you get the fruit of your labour.

If you enjoy reading, go to the library instead of staying at home to read. When you read at home, there is an urge to smoke because there is no “NO Smoking” rule at home but when you are out in the library, you are not allowed to smoke in the library by law. This will definitely help you to quit smoking.

However, if you like to socialise, you can always join a group such as knitting group, book club or even the community centre to spend your time contributing to your group. For instance, if you join the community centre, you get to know more people and you can help out when there is an event in your area. There are so many clubs and groups available and I am sure there is one for you.

To overcome shyness, you need to meet more people. Some people shy away from the community, which is bad because you are isolating yourself from other people. No one would be able to help you if you do not mingle with the others. Break the ice by chatting with the locals about their lives and hobbies. This way, you will be more open to others and willing to accept their help when you need it especially when you are on a quit smoking program.

Addiction to Nicotine

When you smoke, soon you will be addicted to nicotine. It is when you have addicted to nicotine that makes quit smoking seems so hard. There is no way you can quit smoking unless you have a strong determination and work hard towards achieving your goal. That is to say, you need to put in a lot of effort in achieving success when you are on a quit smoking program.

There are a few ways to get rid of the addiction and some of the ways are harder than the others.

Nicotine Replacement

This is also known as NRT. There are many nicotine replacement therapy available such as nicotine patch, nicotine gum and even nicotine spray. All the NRT being sold in US is approved by the FDA so there is nothing much to worry about except to focus on quit smoking. NRT is to help you get out of the addiction slowly.

You can quit smoking cold turkey but for the next few months you will be suffering the withdrawal symptoms and soon you will find yourself lighting another cigarette. NRT helps by supplying certain dosage of nicotine into your body without you smoking. Within weeks or months, you will be able to feel the difference of not having to depend on nicotine anymore.

Behavioural Treatments

This treatment is through the process of creating smoke free environment, support from friends and family, telephone counselling, face-to-face counselling and many other supportive ways.

This is because smokers need to understand his/her own behaviours of smoking and learn how to curb the temptations. If the smoker is strong and determined, he/she will be able to achieve success in quit smoking. However, counter wise, some people failed because without the help and support they needed, they can’t go far.

Addiction to nicotine is something you need to fight on your own. People can help by teaching you and guiding you on the steps to quit smoking but in the end it is totally about you whether you can do it or not. To achieve success in stop smoking, have a strong determination and remember you quit smoking for your own good and for the people you love as well.

Nicorelief - A Nicotine Gum To Quit Smoking

Nicorelief is a nicotine gum that helps people to stop smoking. Nicotine gum works just like nicotine patch except that you chew on nicotine gum and you stick the nicotine patch to your skin to use it.

•angina
•dental disease
•diabetes
•high blood pressure
•irregular heartbeat

The best idea to make sure that you don’t smoke is to always carry the nicotine gum with you. Remember not to smoke when you are having the nicotine gum. When you feel tired of chewing on the gum, you may suck hard on the gum to get the nicotine you need.

How to use the nicotine gum?

You have to chew on the nicotine gum in the mouth but not swallow the gum. You are advised to follow the instructions that come together with the package. You should only use the gum when you have the strong urge to smoke.

Do not use more than 30 pieces of gum a day. Too much gum can increase the risk of an overdose. As the urge to smoke gets less, gradually reduce the number of pieces each day over a period of 2 to 3 months. When you are only using 1 or 2 pieces a day, stop using the nicotine gum.

If you have any problems, consult your physician immediately.

NRT As The Solution For Quit Smoking

Nicotine Replacement Therapies or also known as NRT is a popular way to quit smoking. One of the most popular products is the nicotine patch. Nicotine patch is available for purchase over the counter since the year 1996. Since then, many smokers have given a try on the nicotine patch. Some managed to quit smoking successfully while others are struggling to quit smoking but nevertheless, whether a smoker manage to quit smoking successfully or not depends on the determination and not on the products or treatments.

How does a nicotine patch works?

A nicotine patch contains a controlled dose of nicotine which is to be released throughout the day to minimise the effect of nicotine withrawal. Gradually, the dependency on nicotine will reduce or drop.

It is very easy to use a nicotine patch as a quit smoking treatment. First of all, get the nicotine patch from the pharmacies. There are different doses such as 21mg, 14mg and 7mg. If you are smoking at least 20 sticks in a day, you should get the 21mg dose of nicotine patch.

Side effects of nicotine patch have been identified as the following:

  • Itching, burning or tingling when the patch is applied. This usually goes away within an hour, and is a result of nicotine coming in contact with the skin.
  • Redness or swelling at the patch site for up to 24 hours.
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If you experience one or more conditions as mentioned above, you should consult the doctor immediately. However, not everyone will have the same effects and sometimes, there are no effects at all.
