Do’s and Don’ts When Helping Someone Quit Smoking

When you are helping someone to quit smoking, there are things you need to keep in mind regarding what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. This is because helping someone quit smoking is a tough job.

You will need to make sure that everything is in proper order to make sure the process is a success. Otherwise, you might waste your effort and in return cause the person to return to the old habit.

Do’s

Do respect the quitter. This is their lifestyle change and their challenge, not yours.

Do ask the person whether he or she wants you to call or visit regularly to see how he or she is doing. Let the person know that it’s okay to call you when they need you.

Do help the quitter get what she or he needs, such as hard candy to suck on, straws to chew on, and fresh veggies cut up.

Do spend time doing things with the quitter to keep his or her mind off smoking like going out for a movie and similar actions.

Do try to see it from the smoker’s point of view.

Do help the quitter with a few chores.

Do celebrate along the way as quitting is a big deal and it takes a long time to achieve.

If you can do these then they will be well on their way to success in quit smoking.

However, problems arise when the quitter suddenly slips. After a long time in the quit process, you find the quitter is going back to the old habit of smoking.

Generally, the most usual reaction would be "oh, no!" but you have to remember that it is the quitter’s journey of quit smoking and there are things you cannot control. If the quitter has gone back to smoking, you can still help out.

One thing in mind is, the don’ts.

Don’t judge, nag, preach, or scold.

Don’t offer advice. Just ask how you can help with the plan or program they are using.

Don’t assume that he or she will start back smoking like before. A "slip" (taking a puff or smoking a cigarette or two) is pretty common when a person is quitting.

Of course, one slip doesn’t mean that the quitter will go back to the old habit definitely, but you need to be there to help remind the quitter about the purpose of quit smoking and how long the quitter has gone and a slip would just ruin everything including the hopes and dreams from the loved ones.

Quit Smoking Program And Rewards

If you are living in Roxby Downs, Woomera and Pimba you can sign up for the quit smoking program and receive a handsome reward of $120. It is a courtesy from Roxby Downs/Woomera Health Service, Building Healthy Communities, and Quit SA. The purpose is to help the residents to stop smoking and live a healthy lifestyle.

A way to help reduce this is to use a Nicotine Replacement Therapy or NRT, according to Mr McInerne. He also added that NRT replaces nicotine from cigarettes and delivers it in a safe way avoiding all those dangerous chemicals associated with cigarettes.

As we all know that nicotine is the main ingredient that causes addiction. This is why when you stop smoking, you will crave for more puffs to get more nicotine. The nicotine level in your body is dropping when you are not smoking and therefore, creates an addiction. To avoid lighting a cigarette, using a NRT can helps you curb your addiction by releasing nicotine through a safer way.

Therefore, it is very important to consider NRT as part of an inportant treatment as it is proven to be able to help die hard smokers to leave the habit of smoking.

You too can change your life.

I Want To Quit Smoking

Story from a young man who has managed to quit smoking.

“I want to quit smoking,” I said.

“What?”, my mum asked.

“I said, I want to quit smoking.”

“Oh, I don’t think you are going to make it. You are a die hard smoker who can never give up smoking, not even for the sake of yourself.”

Quit smoking has always been a torture for me. My mum was right that I can never stop smoking because I was too addicted to smoking. However, I was determined to quit smoking no matter what happened and that was when I met Patrick and he said to me, “I am going to help you” and he kept his word. He was there when I need advice, when I was in trouble and when I need to talk to someone.

There are many people like this young man who is in the dilemma of quit smoking. Some people will say positive things to you but most of the time all you can hear is the negative comments people throwing at you. They are trying to discourage you so that you will be part of them, smokers.

There are many bad effects about smoking that I am sure are enough to make any smokers to quit but then most smokers have been ignorant to listen to the effects and learn more about it. There are more people out there who prefer to just smoke and have fun expecially teenagers, no doubt about it.

When you have take the first step and decide to quit smoking, you must stick to it. How to stick to your own resolution? It is simple.

Everyday when you wake up, remind yourself about your goal for that day and that is to stop smoking, meaning you cannot take a puff for the whole day. Keep on doing this and you will restrain yourself from smoking. Of course it is difficult to refrain from something you have been doing daily but simple ways such as substituting cigarettes with sweets or eat fruits when you crave for a puff can help you take away your dependency on cigarettes.

Then, you can consider taking the NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) as it is more effective in helping to reduce your craving.

As conclusion, if there is a will to stop smoking, there is a way to make it happen.
