A good reason that might just make you attempt to quit smoking is when you check your total budget. Sometimes simply trying to quit to improve your health may not just be a strong push for you. You have to open your mind to be able to see how much does smoking really costs you each year. This can become even more expensive when you have to shell out a great amount for health care because smoking related complications come out. However, at the minimum, smoking will cost you the price of the cigarettes themselves.

If you have taken the time to do mental calculations of how much smoking have cost you, you would surely find it rather a noticeable amount. Prices are steadily rising, and that includes the price of cigarettes. A big reason for this is that many states as well as the federal government imposed an awfully high amount of taxes for cigarettes to offset the ill effects that cigarettes brought to health. On average, a pack of cigarette is sold at $5 all over the country. If your habit of smoking makes you consume a single pack per day then it would add up to seven packs a week.

You might have the impression that it really does not cost that much. But if you think of spending $35 on cigarettes, you might just be surprised how it has added up so quickly. Imagine in a single week you are burning your 35 hard-earned dollars! For a lot of people, this already translates to a tank of gas, a movie date, or a brand new outfit if you are a smart shopper. Or you can see your account deposit getting bigger and bigger, rather than have it burn to ashes.

Though $35 may be such a big amount, this might just be a measly price to pay for a hobby that many find immensely enjoyable. If we take the days of the month, 30 days on average, and each day you are smoking $5 per pack then in a month you have spent approximately $150. This is rather a big cut to your budget which could have gone to other expenses such as gas bills, power bills, water bills, phone bills, or even an occasional night out of town.

If you are interested to see how much smoking is costing you the whole year round, consider that each year you are consuming 365 packs of cigarettes. Multiply each pack by 20 sticks and you are inhaling 7,300 cigarettes each year which comes at a staggering $1,825! Talk about extravagantly spending money just for smoking! Do not forget though that we are only computing the cost for a single pack a day habit, and assuming too that it is only $5 dollars that you spent per pack. Many states have much higher prices, while other states may have a little bit lower. If you make a double pack consumption per day then you are spending $3,650 and smoking 14,600 sticks per year.

Adding up the price of cigarettes that you smoke for a year is shocking. If you make an approximation of spending 5 years of smoking and not thinking of quitting at the moment, then you are looking at a huge amount of $9,125 for a single pack a day consumption and an astonishing $18,250 for a 2 pack a day habit. The amount of money that you could have kept from refraining to smoke is certainly immense.

If the idea of stopping smoking for improved health is still not a very strong motivation, the cost of smoking each year may be. Prices of cigarettes keep on increasing and the escalating cost of living just make it doubly hard for families to live within their budget. Saving money, in whatever way possible is a big help to the family. Even the costly price of stop smoking aids is still least as compared to the cost of continuing the habit.

There certainly comes a point in life when everyone doubts his or her ability. This is not something unusual. This is often what a smoker trying to quit feels when he or she is under wraps of the stressful situation. Coming up with a good decision on how to handle the process of quitting smoking is very critical. If you devote time to carefully lay down a strong plan, then you have better chances of success. Envisioning yourself to succeed in your plan is very important in your venture, but being unable to picture yourself as accomplishing your goal will often result to an ineffective pattern of trying to quit.

What differentiates smokers who successfully quit from those who remain struggling in their habit is the former’s strong desire to quit and the determination to make it to the end. There are those who seem to be interested and played with the idea but only for a short period of time. Their interest might lead them to read a book, talk to a doctor but still remain unsuccessful because they have not done the necessary changes in their lifestyles. In contrast, those who are determined to quit, do the same and even broadcast their desire to quit and they take everything to heart. They ask for help from friends and family and act on their advice. In addition, they actively seek information to know the best options and aids that are suitable to their own lifestyle and in how to improve more their health.

This difference spells success or failure, why others completely break the chains of smoking while others remain to be caught in a vicious cycle of trying. You really have to decide firmly that you would stop, and you have to sell that idea to yourself. If you just thought of the possibility of succeeding, you are really going to have difficulty in making it to the end. But if you program your mind to succeed, the question will only be how soon you are going to realize your goal.

We people get bombarded by subliminal messages. Others make subliminal suggestions to us, but most of these messages are what we tell to ourselves. In out attempt to quit smoking, it is then important to train ourselves to only think of positive and constructive messages. If you are suggesting to your inner self that you are confident and you can succeed, you are building your will power which will not easily falter when temptation to smoke arise. Unlike when you constantly think that you are weak, most definitely, you would get weakened when temptations stare you at your face.

It is a known fact that quitting smoking is not easy. Acknowledging that quitting is difficult is not the same as seeing yourself failing in the process already. The difference between the two is that in the former, you know exactly what challenges are going to be and you are bracing yourself for them. It is difficult of course when you already have the mindset of the latter, expecting to fail before you even begin. Feeling weak and less confident can undermine your success and will surely bring you to failure.

Grooming yourself for success means that you have admitted that quitting will certainly take a lot of effort but you are willing to take the challenge and that you would stay committed until you accomplished your goals no matter what comes your way. Spotting the problem as they emerge and immediately looking for their remedies are important to finally overcoming the habit. You will find out that slowly reaching your goal is better than quitting for a weekend. While it might be a less difficult thing to do to just quit for the weekend and see how everything goes, you will soon discover that such kind of approach will just let you easily slip back to the habit again. The approach to quit will be more effective if you start thinking that you are really going to quit for good.

by Darren Warmuth

Feelings of fatigue, irritability and an extremely persistent headache are all side effects of nicotine withdrawal and are all perfectly normal. Why? Simply because it is in the first 72 hours which nicotine purges itself from your system – regardless of the stop smoking method you have chosen to use.

Preparation is the key. By knowing what you are in for, you can make plans to deal with the feelings and symptoms and not have to hide away where you won’t bother anyone. However it is also a good idea to inform your family and friends (but only if they are supportive) of your goals. This also gives them the opportunity to stay clear if they think you might be a little bit cranky!

Also keep in mind that you will be going through these trying times and have plans to work through them, should they arise. It can really nip withdrawal symptoms in the bud. It is helpful to have made a list of what you feel you may experience for symptoms of withdrawal. Some of the things that you may want to include on your list are:

Feeling angry or agitated: I will take deep breaths and take a walk outside. I will leave the room or go take a shower.

Feeling overly emotional or sensitive: Seek out somewhere you can be alone until the feelings subside.

Feeling tired: I will allow myself to be able to rest and heal from my addiction.

Feeling nauseated: I will go outside and get some fresh air.

After eating, I will: Read to keep my mind occupied so I don’t crave the ‘after-dinner’ smoke.

By drinking lots of fluids, and most especially water, your body’s stores of nicotine will be rapidly metabolized and flushed from your system. The downside is that you will have to go to the bathroom more often, but the upside is that the nicotine will clear itself from your system that much quicker and alleviate the physical withdrawal symptoms.

A few things can make the withdrawal symptoms stronger rather than weaker. Caffeine may be one of those. But not for all people. Every situation is unique. Best to judge for yourself. If you are finding that caffeinated drinks are causing you cravings, you should cut down drastically or quit altogether.

Sometimes giving up too many things at once can also open up another can of worms, so maybe just try cutting back on the caffeine. Water, fruit juices, and even ice cream shakes, can help clear out your system and get those withdrawal symptoms done with faster.

Sleep, or the lack of it, is another common side effect of stopping smoking. It doesn’t seem to matter how tired you are during the day, a good sound sleep can be elusive as your mind doesn’t seem to want to shut down, nor can you find a comfortable position in which to rest.

To help alleviate this, I recommend a hot shower before heading off to bed to help you relax. Usually the sleep deprivation only lasts for a night or two. However if it persists, I would suggest a visit to the pharmacy to pick up a sleeping aid until the restlessness passes. It won’t last forever.

End the Habit is proud to receive a 5-Star rating from SmokingReviews.org.

One of the hardest things to do in life is to quit smoking. The habit of smoking itself is often cited by most people as being the hardest part. Try replacing your smoking habit with a much healthier habit to aid in quitting smoking for good. Also, it’s important to remember that it will take time to get use to your new healthy habit just as it took time for you to get use to smoking.

If you are determined to quit smoking, you have made an impressive start. However, if you have decided to quit on your own, you are doing even better. Sounds strange does it? You would be surprised at just how many people decide to quit smoking by being informed by their doctor, spouse, parent, sibling or friend that they will be quitting. In order to successfully quit smoking for good you need to decide for yourself to quit. If you have actually made this decision on your own, you are doing an amazing job. If you are letting someone push you into quitting you are just setting yourself up for headaches, hassles and complications that are easily avoided.

A developed pattern in the way one smokes is something every smoker has. If you start smoking a pack a day, this becomes one of your habits. Breaking your smoking habit wil be easier if you start out with small steps. Success wil come if you change your habits slowly. Instead of smoking your usual cigarette after a meal, try brushing your teeth. You may realize you like the fresh mouth over the cigarette tasting one and this soon becomes a healthy habit. Chew gum or suck on hard candy if you are not able to brush your teeth after a meal.

If there are any specific circumstances that always trigger a cigarette craving, you should work to avoid the situation. If it is something that you absolutely cannot avoid, such as dinner times, you need to create an alternative habit that you replace smoking with. For example, if you always smoke as soon as you get to your car after work, you might want to consider carpooling with someone who does not smoke, taking a different route home, stopping for groceries, jamming to some music or even taking a bus. Anything you can do to shake up your normal smoking routine is good.

There will of course be times that it is quite difficult to break the habits. If you find yourself in a position where you cannot avoid a typical smoking situation, you need to create a way to deal with it. Some people use nicotine gum whenever they are faced with a smoking situation. Others find that the stop smoking sticks are beneficial. These sticks can allow you to hold a pretend cigarette that just provides your hands with something to do. If you find these quite useful then you know that your problem is your hands are idle, finding something for your hands to do might help a lot.

Trying to quit is a very difficult process. Many people take weeks if not months to quit smoking completely. If you are struggling far too much with the idea of completely quitting at once you may find it is much better for your own situation to slowly cut back on your cigarette consumption. Regardless of the precise method that you choose, it can take a minimum of 2 weeks to start adapting new habits. This means that any new behavior you adopt in your quest to stop smoking must be repeated continuously for at least two weeks before you will start to see a real difference in your lifestyle. Giving yourself plenty of time to work on your new habits is essential and will set you on the road to success.

Attempting to know exactly how to reduce stress that accompanies quitting smoking is a challenge. There are so many factors out there which could group together and have the power to stress you badly and knowing how to address these potential problems would be essential for your success. Unless you know exactly what you are getting into, you would find it difficult to accomplish your goals, without being into a worse situation. Learning to handle your stress goes together with reducing smoking. It is but natural to see stress as complicating any efforts to quit.

A good reminder if you are really intending to stop smoking is to learn ways by which you can relax and reduce stress. Since your life is not confined only to your tiny safe world, you really have to live with the stress in life. This can be done through activities such as yoga, meditation, and even a nice warm bath or shower. If you see yourself as stressed out at work, give yourself a breather by taking a small walk around the building or by sipping that relaxing cup of tea. You have to devise means to beat stress, so you would not collapse. Simply ignoring stress would not help as it makes quitting all the more difficult, In the end, stress can get to you and can just drive you back again to smoke even more and to complicate your health further.

You need to identify a hobby that can give you time out from the stresses of family and work life. Almost all people would agree that jobs can become so dreadfully stressful at some point. Having a diversion can help you forget about your stresses even for a brief time. The time off will allow you to gather back your energy and put your mind together for a good comeback. Look then, if you still have none, hobbies that would afford you enjoyment and relaxation. It is not recommended to take a hobby that is just as stress-inducing as your job.

Make relaxation a regular thing. Everyone deserves enough time for oneself and this is very important when trying to quit. You surely need this time of solitude to be able to unhook from life. These brief moments are helpful in the process of quitting smoking. If you are constantly bombarded by the presence of people, your patience would immediately wear out. You would find yourself easily snapping which subsequently leads to higher stress level. A better way may be to stay up an extra ten minutes or get up ten minutes earlier so you can have these precious moments to gather yourself up.

It is a fact that many people get hooked to smoking to relieve themselves of stress. This means you have to come up with some techniques for stress relief, otherwise, your attempt might just end up in yoyo. Working to overcome the habit of smoking is not simple and easy. It involves a lot of diligence, and trying to lessen the stress in your life is a good start. If you are like most people who could not avoid stress, then try to properly handle stress. These suggestions might just help you cope with stress without trying to get another stick of cigarette again.

Doctors of homeopathic medicine have known about the best natural ways to stop smoking for many years. The mainstream medical community typically recommends nicotine replacement to help you quit smoking. Homeopathic remedies contain a very small amount of actual tobacco, as well as other herbal and plant-based ingredients.

Trying to quit cigarettes for many individuals is quite hard because of the addictive nature of nicotine. Nicotine is one of the most difficult substances to “shake” off and is often compared to heroine or cocaine because of the strong withdrawal pains people can have.

Some doctors recommend that one of the best natural ways to stop smoking is to gradually cut back the number of cigarettes that you smoke every day, but that often does not actually help people quit smoking. Because, the psychological dependence on the act of smoking is not addressed.

In order to quit cigarettes, you need to be able to overcome the psychological, as well as the physical addiction. Either nicotine replacement or the small amount of tobacco in homeopathic remedies will help with the physical cravings, but not the psychological dependence.

So, the best natural ways to stop smoking, in terms of effectiveness, include herbal and nutritional support to reduce physical cravings and counseling, emotional support, relaxation techniques and education. Before you can quit smoking, you need to learn why you smoke in the first place.

It’s very rare that a smoker has not tried to quit cigarettes at one time or another. However, one thing or another always prevented them from being able to quit. If they were successful in their search for the best natural ways to stop smoking they would have been able to stop.

Because people are concerned that they may experience weight gain they stop trying to quit smoking before they even begin. Have you ever heard of the poison nut? It’s a homeopathic remedy that halts hunger and the desire for food. It makes it possible to quit cigarettes, and not increase your weight.

An effective homeopathic remedy is one of the best natural ways to stop smoking for many reasons. It can help you quit smoking without becoming anxious, nervous or irritable and without worsening your cough. It will help you quit cigarettes, safely, easily and quickly.

When it comes to quitting smoking, the reality is, it is easier to get into the habit again than kick it for good. What may have compelled you to stop smoking is the desire to make yourself as a good model to your kids. This can be a great challenge for parents to quit. They want to discourage smoking at home, thus, they need to initiate in creating a smoke-free home environment. You may find yourself at this present predicament, but there are available solutions out there which can help you.

A good idea is to involve your children in your effort to stop smoking by letting them be a witness to your struggle. Ask them to be your help and strength when the urge to smoke is getting into you. An unassuming and honest discussion with your children can be a good way to show to them just how difficult the struggle can be, while letting you fight your battles openly. It is often helpful to talk about problems as they have the tendency to become much smaller once shared out. This is a very effective means to fight against the urge to smoke , after all, parents who can discuss on anything with their children are able to resolve a lot of issues as well. This may also be a good means to talk about essential matters and at the same time to seek support from children.

Giving more attention to your children and less of yourself or of where you can find your pack of cigarettes will make the urge easier to reduce. Try to ask suggestions from your child of how you can fight the urge. It may be, letting your child come with you as you search for a good cigarette substitute in the market, such as a candy, or letting your child help you find a stop smoking aid which you can buy.

Getting your children involve in your decisions would give them the real picture of what you are experiencing. Keeping your struggle all to yourself may let your children think that smoking is an easy thing to do or to quit. They might also be tempted to smoke. Nevertheless, your effort for an honest and open relationship with them should not mean that you can just smoke around them. Second hand smoke can harm your children and this is a good enough reason not to light a stick around them. It might be helpful to ask your child to keep a smoking log to monitor you.

Definitely, each family has its own ideas of what are acceptable talks or information to share about and even their level of comfort. However, if you feel that you are already at the limit of what is comfortable for you then be quick to adjust. But remember that, your children are still the best help for you if you want to quit. After all, they are known for their tendency to pick on people as well as voice out other peoples flaws.

When you give permission to your child to help you in your struggle, you would realize that you are no longer interested in smoking. This is true when your child constantly picks on you. Whatever you feel is best for you or your circumstance at present, be quick to grab the opportunity of bonding with your child and use that bond to overcome completely the temptation to smoke. When you succeed in quitting, your child will be most proud of you and you will certainly come out a much confident individual.

It’s the first three days that people find the most difficult regardless of the smoking cessation method they’ve chosen. This is due to the fact that it is in those 72 hours when the nicotine leaving your body is felt the greatest. This can lead to feelings of irritabililty, fatigue, and a persistent headache – all perfectly normal symptoms of withdrawal.

The good news is that if you prepare mentally for your quit day, many of the symptoms will not make you feel like you have to lock yourself in a closet. Letting friends and family members know that today is your quit day (if you feel they would be a help and not a hindrance) would be a good idea and since it’s common knowledge about how people act when they stop smoking, you may just get the to house to yourself for the day.

Also keep in mind that you will be going through these trying times and have plans to work through them, should they arise. It can really nip withdrawal symptoms in the bud. It is helpful to have made a list of what you feel you may experience for symptoms of withdrawal. Some of the things that you may want to include on your list are:

Agitated or angry: Find something to do to take your mind off things. In solitude is probably best.

Feeling overly emotional or sensitive: Seek out somewhere you can be alone until the feelings subside.

Feeling tired: Rest and healing are needed to allow myself to heal from my addiction.

Feeling nauseated: I will go outside and get some fresh air.

After I eat I will: Find something to do so I don’t crave the ‘after-dinner’ cigarette.

Drinking lots and lots of fluids, especially water, is a great way to clear the nicotine from your system as the fluids will metabolize your body’s chemical stores. Side effects, at worse, are more frequent bathroom breaks and a water-logged stomach. The upside is that the faster the nicotine leaves your system, the sooner the physical symptoms will subside.

A few things can make the withdrawal symptoms stronger rather than weaker. Caffeine may be one of those. But not for all people. Every situation is unique. Best to judge for yourself. If you are finding that caffeinated drinks are causing you cravings, you should cut down drastically or quit altogether.

However, giving up multiple vices at once can also be very stressful. So be wary and maybe just cut back on the caffeine to start. But be sure to use plenty of water, juices and even milkshakes to kick start your system and get those withdrawal symptoms out of the way.

Another common side effect of quitting smoking is the inability to fall asleep or to stay soundly asleep. Regardless of how tired you might have been throughout the day, it seems like your mind won’t shut down for the evening and comfort is nowhere to be found.

Taking a nice hot shower or a soothing bath, just prior to going to bed can be very helpful and can help you become relaxed enough to fall asleep. Normally, this will only last one or two nights at the most, but if it becomes persistent, you may want to consider taking an over-the-counter sleep aid for a night or two. Your sleeplessness won’t last for long.

The whole idea behind nicotine replacement therapy is that it gives your body a small amount of nicotine to help curb the cravings. This small amount helps to keep the withdrawals to a minimum. Keep in mind though that nicotine replacement therapy will cause you to go through withdrawals twice. First when you quit smoking then when you stop the therapy. You do not need to see a doctor to get this form of therapy.

Many people can find this very difficult, especially the second time around as that old familiar edgy feeling comes back and you basically have to go through a milder form of withdrawals for the next three days. People aren’t really prepared for that second wave of withdrawal and often have a hard time letting go of the nicotine replacement therapy. Those that can, have made a very important step to becoming smoke free and changing their lifestyle.

Nicotine replacement therapy comes in many varieties; the patch is the most common. Usually you will start with a higher dose and steadily decrease the dose over a 6 to 12 week period. Please note that the amount of nicotine delivered over th 24 hours often exceeds what the body can handle and can produce side affects.

The feeling of nausea and breaking out in a cold sweat is one of the side effects associated with using the patch. Often, this is an indication that the dose of the patch you are wearing is too high for your system and you can either try a lower dose patch the next day or it might be wise if you to look into a different form of nicotine replacement therapy. Although many people have used this with great success, everybody’s body chemistry is different and yours may not be adapted to this form of nicotine replacement therapy.

Now there are several forms of nicotine replacement therapy, and things have come a long way from simply just being a patch. There’s nicotine gum, that I must say has improved in flavor immensely, long gone is that pepper taste it is left lingering in your mouth. Today comes in several fruit flavors that you can actually chew without feeling like you’re going to throw up. You set your own dosing schedule, which is based on your own withdrawal symptoms.

Another therapy option is the nicotine lozenge, which you can find in a number of flavors. It delivers a low dose of nicotine to your system as it slowly dissolves in your mouth. You are in control of the dosage which you can adjust according to your withdrawals. Normally you can allow 2 to 4 hours in between tablets. You will experience some type of secondary withdrawal symptoms when you wean yourself off of them, but it’s worth it when you know that in the end you can be smoke free.

Another method of nicotine replacement therapy is the nicotine inhaler. It is a good method for anyone who needs to have something in their hand, a common problem among smokers. The inhaler sends a low dose of nicotine to your system which helps deter the cravings. I do not have first hand experience with the inhaler, but I have heard from several people who have been successful with it.

The majority of nicotine replacement therapy options is available without prescription nowadays and can easily be picked up at your corner drugstore or supermarket. The advantage would be, not having to have the added expense of going to the doctor, but you still have to expect to pay quite a bit even over the counter. And many of the products have an online support system available along with several forums, in which you can receive support from other people who are also using the product and trying to quit.

The side effects of nicotine replacement therapy can vary from insomnia to headache to nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Some of these side effects can be temporary, but if they are too much for you, you should consider lowering your dosage or changing to another form of nicotine replacement therapy. You might also want to try a non-nicotine based medication.
