You have smoked your life away. Why want to waste such a precious life and waste your money poisoning yourself? I’m writing you a letter that I may never send. You see, I can’t have any contact with you right now. When I said goodbye, I meant it. But there are times when the thought of you is overwhelming. And so I think it will help for me to be completely honest with myself.

I must confess that I became dependent on you. I believed that I could not bear to feel my loneliness. Instead, I always turned to you. And with you around, I never did anything about it. I didn’t bother to reach out to others, to develop more healthy relationships. I got wrapped up in my own little world, just you and me and my fantasies that things would get better some day.

But the truth is, things didn’t get better, because I lost touch with my real feelings. I had nothing to motivate me. You seemed to satisfy all of my desires.

Now I realize that I gave away my power to you. I convinced myself that you held the solution to all of my problems. In fact, I went into denial. My perceptions of reality became distorted. I confused quenching the uncomfortable feelings with actually dealing with the source of them and taking action on my own behalf.

I am taking this power back now. I am learning how to accept my feelings. I am learning how to face reality without you.

And I see you for what you really are. A false friend. One who would take my very life force away from me. One who will abandon me in the end, no matter how long I try to hang on to you. It’s a harsh thing to say, but that is not nearly as harsh as the toll you have taken on my health.

I am glad to finally feel the anger that I used to suppress about our relationship. I’ve been through the terror of losing you and the agonies of withdrawal and I’m stronger for it. I’ve accepted that I might have moments of confusion and self-doubt, and learned that they don’t mean that I have to go back to you.

Now that I’ve finally gotten you out of my system, I have a choice. And I exercise that choice with pride and reverence. I never want to take my freedom for granted. So, like the song says:

Go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
Cause you’re not welcome anymore…
I will survive!

You smoke, your wife smoke, but your kids don’t smoke. You have no right to put them at risk for getting asthma. Do you know that asthma is the major disease that cause childhood hospitalization? It is estimated that 50% of the children around the world are exposed to the tobacco smoke that might trigger asthma. Therefore it is very important for the parents to provide a smoke free home for the kids’ growth. I am sure you would not want to see your kids going in and out of the hospital for medications and treatments. 

Yes, it is difficult to quit smoking but there are many ways to prevent your kids from getting asthma from your cigarette smoke. 

You can smoke outside whenever you need to smoke. Try to smoke as far as possible from your kids. This way, you still get to smoke and your kids are not exposed to the danger of asthma. The best way is not to smoke within the home area.

Otherwise, get help from the experts to help you quit smoking. Of course this is the best way to prevent asthma among your kids. You can do this step by step. You don’t have to quit smoking the cold turkey way but you can try out different methods such as NRT. This is one of the treatments for quit smoking. If this doesn’t work for you try out other methods like acupuncture.

As long as you try your best at quit smoking, you can achieve success in stop smoking.

Addiction to Nicotine

When you smoke, soon you will be addicted to nicotine. It is when you have addicted to nicotine that makes quit smoking seems so hard. There is no way you can quit smoking unless you have a strong determination and work hard towards achieving your goal. That is to say, you need to put in a lot of effort in achieving success when you are on a quit smoking program.

There are a few ways to get rid of the addiction and some of the ways are harder than the others.

Nicotine Replacement

This is also known as NRT. There are many nicotine replacement therapy available such as nicotine patch, nicotine gum and even nicotine spray. All the NRT being sold in US is approved by the FDA so there is nothing much to worry about except to focus on quit smoking. NRT is to help you get out of the addiction slowly.

You can quit smoking cold turkey but for the next few months you will be suffering the withdrawal symptoms and soon you will find yourself lighting another cigarette. NRT helps by supplying certain dosage of nicotine into your body without you smoking. Within weeks or months, you will be able to feel the difference of not having to depend on nicotine anymore.

Behavioural Treatments

This treatment is through the process of creating smoke free environment, support from friends and family, telephone counselling, face-to-face counselling and many other supportive ways.

This is because smokers need to understand his/her own behaviours of smoking and learn how to curb the temptations. If the smoker is strong and determined, he/she will be able to achieve success in quit smoking. However, counter wise, some people failed because without the help and support they needed, they can’t go far.

Addiction to nicotine is something you need to fight on your own. People can help by teaching you and guiding you on the steps to quit smoking but in the end it is totally about you whether you can do it or not. To achieve success in stop smoking, have a strong determination and remember you quit smoking for your own good and for the people you love as well.
