The good news is that in either case the right advice can make the challenge easier for you. Proper preparation is key, as is choosing the correct method to quit.</p>
<p>I was a two pack a day smoker for getting on for twenty years and I&#8217;ll be honest with you, I didn&#8217;t quit because I didn&#8217;t like smoking. I enjoyed smoking. I liked having a cigarette with a beer, or a cigar after a good meal. I didn&#8217;t consider that it made me smell (although of course I know now that it did).</p>
<p>So why did I quit smoking? Because I was getting out of bed in the morning short of breath &#8211; before I&#8217;d even done any work &#8211; and at only 40 years old. I took notice of the warning signs. If you&#8217;re getting those same signs you need to act &#8211; or you&#8217;re on a short trip to a pine box.</p>
<p><strong>So that&#8217;s where I came from, let&#8217;s get back to the tips to stop smoking.</strong></p>
<p>1. Now this one might seem really obvious but make sure you&#8217;re ready to quit. If you&#8217;re thinking &#8220;yea, I ought to quit smoking, it&#8217;s probably not very good for me&#8221; then forget it. Have a cigarette. You&#8217;re just not going to succeed. Nicotine is a seriously hard drug and it&#8217;s not going to let you off easy. If you&#8217;re in two minds about it then find a real good reason to quit. If you&#8217;ve got kids you might try this one: how would you like them to watch you die?</p>
<p>2. Make a date. Make an appointment with yourself for the day you&#8217;re going to stop smoking. Mark it on the calendar. Tell people about it. Build up to it like it&#8217;s a special holiday. <p>3. Do some research into the best way to quit smoking for you &#8211; the way you feel comfortable with. Some people can quit cold-turkey but that&#8217;s real tough and you need a strong will. Some prefer patches or there are pills and other medications. In most places your doctor can give you advice or you can alsolook for stop smoking telephone centres.</p>

<p>I was watching the comedy &#8220;City Slickers&#8221; the other day. In it Billy Crystal plays a middle-aged man who has &#8220;lost his smile&#8221; and can&#8217;t seem to find happiness or meaning in his life. So he sets off with some friends to go on a &#8220;fantasy vacation&#8221; where they get to play cowboys on a real cattle drive. Jack Palance plays a crusty old cowboy named Curly, guiding the &#8220;city folk&#8221; on the drive.</p>
<p>Billy Crystal and Jack Palance are having a conversation along the trail.
