Smoking and Breastfeeding – A Danger for Infants

Breastfeeding is considered best for babies and almost every expert advises moms to feed their kids despite of her habits of cigarette smoking. But a mom’s habit of cigarette smoking can be very ailing for her kid’s health. Hence, every breast feeder and expectant mother is advised not to smoke.

There is an inverse link between smoking and breastfeeding. Females who smoke, as well as, breastfeed their kids always complain about less milk production. Sometimes, the quantity of milk produced is just too little. It is not adequate for their growing kids. It is also observed that the quantity of Vitamin C is also lesser in the milk of smoking and breastfeeding mothers.

Kids who consume the milk of smoking mothers are more prone to symptoms of nausea and other diseases such as diarrhea. Children, who are exposed to passive smoking, even develop a certain predisposition to allergies and other problems like pneumonia, bronchitis and sometimes sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Though nicotine is addictive, smoking and breastfeeding mothers give this addiction to their kids as well. And in return, these kids are more likely to be smoker in their early ages when they grow up to be young adolescents. Smoking also increases the level of carbon monoxide in the kid’s body, which leads to the reduction of oxygen in the blood. This is a critical situation for the kid’s health that creates problems in metabolism and blood circulation.

Smoking is dangerous not only for breastfeeding moms but also for those who are expecting to become a mother. As in accordance with a significant data, 5-6% of prenatal deaths are the result of a mother’s smoking habit and 17 -18% of fetuses become prone to several diseases. This is why it is very important for mothers to stop smoking.
