<p>Memories are a part of everyone&#8217;s life, they help make us who we are today. Memories can be happy, sad, funny, or in some cases traumatic. Sometimes we wish we could hold on to the happy memories forever and forget all the sad or traumatic ones in an instant. Alas this is just wishful thinking, but what is this were possible, think about how different your life would be.</p>
<p> Think back for a moment, find a memory you would like to relive. Think about how you feel, how the memory makes you feel. Perhaps you want to change something in the memory, think about how this could change your life. Now imagine for a moment that this memory is a traumatic memory. You would be reliving this memory over and over again everyday. The memory will torment you and cause stress and anxiety in all aspects of your life. This is what people with post traumatic stress syndrome deal with everyday. Everyday they relive a painful memory such as a rape, abuse, war memories, or something as simple as a car accident. The memory consumes them and everyone around them. Often they are not able to hold jobs, have families or healthy relationships, and in some extreme cases the person is not able to function at all.</p>
<p> Post traumatic stress syndrome can cause people to of depressed, dysfunctional, stressed and anxious just to name a few. Sometimes the person may not know they are suffering form post traumatic stress syndrome, sometimes they find out because of a trigger such as a honking horn or a certain song. The reaction to a memory or trigger can often be severe. Typically people turn to drugs and alcohol to self medicate. But like most addictions, they begin to consume the person only adding to their stress.</p>
<p> Self destructive behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse are common for people suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome. There is good new though. New treatments are being explored. One of those new treatments is hypnosis. Hypnosis or behavior modification, works with the mind in a unique way. While undergoing hypnosis, you are able to revisit the traumatic memory and learn to look at it in a different way. You learn to deal with your feelings toward the memory in a more positive way instead of letting the feelings consume you and those around you. In some cases you may even be able to forget the memory completely.</p>
<p> According to a Canadian newspaper, Ottawacitizen.com, scientists have been using a drug called Propranolol, commonly used in patients with hypertension, to treat and delete memories in people with post traumatic stress syndrome. The drug is injected to a certain part of the brain while thinking of a specific traumatic memory. Once the drug is injected, studies have shown that particular memory has been deleted or replaced. The treatment is still in the early stages or research and development and there are no concrete studies to prove this drug actually works, only suggestions. People who suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome need help now, everyday is like torture for them, and they need something that will work. Hypnosis fits the bill for both.</p>
<p> Hypnosis offers a safe, non invasive, and readily available treatment for those suffering from painful, traumatic memories. No one wants to feel trapped in their mind and have one memory control everything in their daily lives. These painful memories make everything more difficult, even if they memory it self seems trivial. In the last year alone Portland moved from number 17 to number 9 on the &#8220;Americas fittest cities&#8221; list in Men&#8217;s Magazine. Maintaining a fit or healthy lifestyle can be easy to achieve for many reasons. One, Oregon is heavy on the out door sports and activities. Second Oregon is never short on organic products and healthy foods both on the menu and in grocery stores. Lastly, Oregon has many weight loss facilities all over the state. However, Oregon was not always so health conscious, but over the last decade Oregon has made a pledge to fight obesity one person at a time.</p>
<p> Passing the &#8220;bike bill&#8221; in 1971 put Oregon as the first state which took the first step toward healthy living. By 2001 3.8% of people were biking to work at least three days per week to according to Oregon.gov. Other fitness activities have also increased over the years. The Nike Hood to Coast Relay Marathon is the largest relay race in North America. It began in 1982 with eight teams. By 1999 it reached capacity of 1,000 teams. If biking or running is not really your cup of tea, there are plenty of hiking trails, gyms and countless dog parks where all activity levels are welcome.</p>
<p> Organic and Trans fat free foods have taken center stage over the last five years. Portland again was at the top of the list as the city had one of the highest percentages of organic food buyers in 2007 (27%). Portland only trailed San Francisco (35%) and Seattle (37%) by a few percentage points according to Vegetarianorganicblog.com. Seeing this demand, grocery stores met with a supply of organic products, a health food section and stocking Trans fat free items. In the past many grocery stores either did not offer items such as tofu or soy and if they did, the cost was through the roof. Now with the increased interest in these products, stores have answered with sales for these items. Grocery retailers are not the only ones seeing the growing health trend, but restaurants also see the benefit to healthier choices.</p>
<p> National chains such as Applebee&#8217;s and Red Robin are offering alternatives for dieters and health nuts a like. Applebee&#8217;s was one of the firsts to offer Weight Watcher menu items and Red Robin offers meat substitutes for all their burgers. Often those who are trying to be healthier avoid eating out because typically there are few healthy choices besides a salad on menus. Let&#8217;s face it salad is boring when steak and potato are on the menu. But now with these new special menus, dieters can feel confident eating out instead of feeling committed to another boring salad.</p>
<p> Being healthy is not simply about eating right but also getting daily exercise. Oregon again has topped the list in this department. While the weather can be temperamental at times, this does not stop people from getting out and enjoying the scenery. Oregon has many parks with pathways, schools with tracks, and parks for dogs. If running or walking is not your thing, many people bike to work. Often in Oregon many companies have &#8220;biking groups&#8221; with contests for the person who rides their bike the most. Oregon was the first state to pass the &#8220;bike bill&#8221; in 1971, by 2001 3.8% of people were biking to work at least three days per week according to Oregon.gov. Since Lance Armstrong brought biking back into the spot light over the last few years, biking in Oregon is hitting an all time high.</p>
<p> While the weather might be temperamental at times, there is no denying Oregonians are health nuts and die-hards when it comes to getting out and getting fresh air. Oregon&#8217;s healthy lifestyle trend is not likely to change anytime soon. Stop trying to silence the voice in your head telling you to get out and become healthy.</p>

<p>Many Americans wish they could change something about themselves. Such as being taller, shorter, or being richer just to name a few. There is a fine line between wanting to change something and having low self esteem. Having a negative or hateful view of yourself is associated with low self esteem. Those suffering from low self esteem usually look at themselves and others negatively, lack confidence, and perform poorly. Trying to figure out what percent of the population suffers from low self esteem is nearly impossible as low self esteem is related to many other emotional issues.</p>
<p> Lacking self confidence or low self esteem is not something a person just learns from one random act, it is something that is learned through repetitive criticism. It can come from just about anyone, parents with unrealistic demands of their children, constant comparison to other siblings or children or simply from parents who do not understand he child&#8217;s needs can leave them feeling misunderstood and detached. Children can also learn poor self esteem from classmates or teachers through the same techniques. Others feel negatively about themselves because of societies demands. Many young girls have expressed pressure to be thin simply from a magazine article, they begin to self criticize every time they read an article or see a photograph.</p>
<p> In today&#8217;s society we are losing one third of our youth to drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, jail, teen pregnancy, crimes and violence, drop outs, and suicide according to Selfesteeminternational.org. All of these problems have one thing in common, low self esteem. Some people of society have a hard time accepting negative self image is the cause for all of these problems. However Selfesteeminternational.org reported that 80-90% of pregnant teens do not give up their children because they feel a baby will give them the unconditional love they never had. High school seniors report using drugs and alcohol as a way to fill a personal void and improve self esteem at the rate of 66%.</p>
<p> There are many programs out there for those who suffer from low self esteem. They range from counseling sessions, take medication, or to reading self help books. There are also new techniques being used to help build confidence, one of those is hypnosis. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to uncover what memories are causing painful low self esteem. Once the memory has been identified, the hypnotist and patient work though the memory and the patient&#8217;s reaction to it. Together they help rebuild self confidence and work through all feelings, good or bad until the patient is satisfied with their progress. Since it works with the subconscious mind, it is easier to open up and express feelings you might not know you were having.</p>
<p> Some still feel that medication or therapy is the best and only way to treat self esteem issues. However, the medications only work with the chemical reactions in the body, it will not create a positive image or with the memories which are causing the patient pain and agony. Therapy can go on for months before the real trigger and emotional reaction is uncovered and it also deals with the mind on a conscious level. When dealing with the mind on a conscious level, patients often become very censored for fear they are being judged by the counselor. While under hypnosis they sub conscious mind takes over allowing for completely candid thoughts.</p>
<p> You have taken the first step in your treatment, whatever it may be. You have acknowledged that you have issues with low self esteem and want to do something about it. You no longer want to go on feeling the way you do. Over 54% of people feel anxiety over financial issues such as rent, credit cards and paychecks. Stress and anxiety are both a state of mind. How you deal with stress and anxiety are completely up to you. Some manage anxiety well while others do not know how to manage their feelings. Learning to manage anxiety and stress can be done, but can also be difficult without help.</p>
<p> First you must identify what your stress and anxiety triggers are. The holidays are a good example of a stress that is not immediately thought of. One person might look at the holidays as a nice fun experience and enjoy making a large dinner for a big family. Another person might look at this same situation and have a panic attack. Other causes of stress and anxiety are obvious such as losing a job, having no money or moving.</p>
<p> Next you must identify what reaction you have to these triggers. Some people eat when they are stressed or nervous, while others drink or smoke. Maybe you get irritable or cry often. Whatever your reactions to high levels of anxiety are, it is important to identify them and understand why you react this way.</p>
<p> It is critical to learn both your triggers and lean how you respond in order to be successful. Without identifying them or learning to manage your anxiety levels, you can have serious problems. Not only does anxiety and stress cause heart attacks, high blood pressure and ulcers it can also cause other things you may not think of. <p>There are many forms of drug and alcohol abuse. Some people binge drink while others drink just to get though the day or to cure their hang over from the previous night. Same with drugs, some abuse street drugs while others take excessive amounts of prescription pills but yet feel it is ok to take the prescription pills since they were prescribed. Whatever your choice of addiction is, they have one thing in common, low self esteem.</p>
<p> Drugs and alcohol are usually just a mask to hide the real problem, low self esteem. According to Selfesteeminternational.org, recovering addicts and alcoholics indicate that low self esteem is the biggest problem in their lives. They feel alcohol is only a symptom to the alcoholic&#8217;s real disease. Low self esteem causes and contributes to anxiety, neurosis, defensiveness and ultimately drug and alcohol abuse according to Selfesteeminternational.org.</p>
<p> Drug and alcohol abuse can start early on, earlier than some parents and society would like to admit. In a study done by Selfesteeminternational.org, 18 year olds who already use drugs and alcohol heavily started using when they were as young as seven. They reported feeling alienated by their families, not good enough, anxious, unhappy and overly impulsive. 66% of high school seniors surveyed reported using drugs or alcohol heavily in order to fit in and fill a personal void.</p>
<p> Low self esteem is painful and difficult to deal with, so many people start self medicating through drugs and alcohol but it soon turns destructive. By drinking or using drugs a vicious cycle of more self hatred starts and before you know it, your life is completely out of control. One drink turns into two, two turns in to three and before you know it your life is all about drinking. You family doesn&#8217;t want you around, you have spent all your money and lost your job. Your actions only lead to more self hate and disappointment in yourself.</p>
<p> People have low self esteem for many reasons. However, low self esteem is not caused from one isolated incident but by repetitive criticism over many years. The criticism can come from anyone, a parent, a sibling, teacher or society in general. It is difficult to estimate how many people are experiencing low self esteem, but it is safe to say many people suffer from at least one of the symptoms. Maybe you are happy to see someone fail, overly aggressive, do not recognize your own good qualities, or try to please others because you do not know how to say no.</p>
<p> One of the most important factors in recovery is acceptance of the disease and being able to identify why you choose to be an addict in the first place. Often it is difficult to address years of low self esteem in a twelve week program. That is why follow up counseling and treatment is recommended. One new treatment that is being recommended is hypnosis. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to identify painful memories causing the low self esteem and help the patient work through the memory and develop new self confidence. Hypnosis is done in a safe environment and is chemical free which appeals to many recovering addicts.</p>
<p> Some people feel therapy and counseling is the best and only treatment needed to help recovering addicts. Unfortunately, if this were true all rehab facilities would offer a 100% cure rate. Most can not even offer a 70% cure rate. It is important to have a treatment plan that will help to identify why you started abusing drugs or alcohol in the first place, and this is difficult to do with a counselor. Often addicts have little trust in anyone let alone counselors and are more censored when talking until they get to know the counselor. Since hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, it allows the addict to think and speak openly about low self esteem issues.</p>
<p> Drug and alcohol abuse is a very serious problem, but what is more concerning is the underlying behavior of self hate. Until that issue is dealt with, the thought of alcohol and drug abuse is always there for the addict. There are many ways to help improve self esteem but why not do it in a safe environment and start dealing with the real problem today.</p>

<p>There are many things in life worrying about, but stress should not be one of them. Stress is like disease which sucks the fun out of everything. Stress cause sleep deprivation, lose interest in activities you once found entertaining, and stress can also cause your work performance to suffer.</p>
<p>Stress, many people think of this as a &#8220;dirty word&#8221; and some think of it as an excuse to act poorly. Stress can be caused by many things, financial problems, marital problems or it could be caused from a happy event such as a wedding, children or going on vacation. Stress is about perception. What is stressful for one may not be for another. Many times we blow things out of proportion and therefore causing more un-necessary stress in our lives. Stress does not have to be caused from something bad in ones life. However stress, whether good or bad can lead to other very serious problems.</p>
<p>Stress has been linked to medical problems such as chronic headaches, age acceleration, lower immune system, heart attacks, and stomach problems, just to name a few. Many people under stress are also short tempered, grouchy, anxious and jumpy.</p>
<p>By learning to manage stress, you will find that you look forward to meeting new people, regain your sense of humor and self confidence. <p>California was the first state in to ban smoking in bars, casinos and restaurants in 1998. In the ten years which have followed, New York, Arizona, Florida, Colorado and now Oregon have joined the trend. In 2001 government officials argued both sides of this heavily debated issue, in the end the bill passed. Two important issues made their way to the front of the debate, establishing a healthy work place and a smoke free environment for non-smokers. By passing the bill Oregon helped look out for the health of all Oregonians.</p>
<p> Through out the 80&#8242;s and early 90&#8242;s bills were passed all over the country outlawing workplace smoking. However these bills did not include bars, restaurants, bowling alleys or casinos. Lobbyists argued for these workers and brought forward statistics showing the effects of second hand smoke. They did not feel it was fair to offer a smoke free environment for some workers and not others. Many of the workers liked their jobs and wanted to keep them but ultimately did not want to be around smoke but they suffered through. In the end they had to deal with many second hand smoke issues.</p>
<p> Dining out, club hopping, a bowling date, all of these things should be remembered as an experience, not as an experience in a cloud of smoke. In the past restaurant and bar owners offered both a non and smoking section. However after examining the filtration systems in restaurants, health officials reported increased chances of second hand smoke health problems. Smoke does not filter out to the outside because of the ventilation systems in buildings. This makes the smoke stale and thick. Many people avoid places such as these because of this one reason! Then once the health risks are added, no one wants to smell and have cancer at the same time! The only way to insure a healthy environment is to have smoking outside. This has an appeal to non-smokers because not only can they dine and actually smell their dinners but they can also not worry about developing other health risks. For restaurant workers, they are able to also rest easy and know their work environment is not causing them cancer.</p>
<p> Some feel the bill takes the rights away from adults to choose what they do to their own bodies. While this may be true, smokers are also taking the same right away from non-smokers. Oregon compromised by allowing smoking out doors. While not everyone agrees with this compromise, all parties agreed.</p>
<p> Smoking can cause serious health problems but smoking is not like alcohol where it only physically effects the consumer. Smoking can effect those all around it. If exposed to second hand smoke, children and non-smokers can become at risk for those same health problems. Some may feel those who work in bars or bingo halls the non-smoker should know the risks associated with second hand smoke. However, previous bills guaranteed a smoke free environment for all, not everyone but those who work in bars or bowling alleys.</p>
<p> Health and fair working conditions are something Oregon law makers truly believe in. Oregon is taking strong steps toward those who are noncompliant with the new bill. There are fines and other consequences for those found to be in violation of the new law. No one should have to make the choice between having health problems and not simply so they can get a job or eat out.</p>

<p>Over 50% of states are covered by a smoking ban of some form according to en.wikipedia.org. The ban severity depends on the state. Some states the ban includes hotel rooms and others it includes restaurants and bars while other states smoking isn&#8217;t allowed anywhere. Since healthcare costs in America are completely out of control, many feel bans such as these have come at a good time. If anything the laws are only going to get more and more strict.</p>
<p> In 2005 Washington state imposed $100.00 fines for lighting up within 25 feet of restaurants, bars, movie complexes and other public places according to an article in USAToday. California also became the first state to out law smoking on all of its beaches, Indiana will not allow smoking at bus stops or ATMs, and in many states healthcare workers are forbidden to smoke during the work day and must sign a contract agreeing to this rule. Other states have taken their smoking bans to another level, in Iowa even smoking in your car anywhere on the grounds with get you a fine USAToday also reports. These trends have no where to go but up mainly due to people raising awareness among the public.</p>
<p> More and more research has come out about second hand smoke. Often those who are exposed to second hand smoke suffer the same health problems as smokers. Cancer, asthma, and emphysema are some of the more common problems associated with second hand smoke. The public feels an obligation to keep non-smokers healthy. The cost of health care are on the rise because of both obesity related health problems and smoking related health complications. The public has had enough.</p>
<p> Since California has been one of the major players in the smoking ban, they decided to take it one step further. Just when the public thought the ban couldn&#8217;t get any tougher, California added the old one two and included a ban on driving while smoking with children in the car. This law passed in 2007 making it one of the most drastic in the nation according to cigarettehouse.net. It outraged smokers who feel smoking in their own car is their business, however California&#8217;s govern and its lawmakers felt differently. Children should not be made to be exposed to second hand smoke.</p>
<p> Some feel by imposing smoking bans on the public, law makers are taking away a smokers right to choose what they do to their own body. While this maybe true, children and non-smokers are not given a choice at all when they are being exposed to second hand smoke. Smokers are still able to smoke in their homes and private property. They are only asked to respect the public who does not want to be around smoke.</p>
<p> Fifty years ago smoking in public places and job sites was widely accepted. It was considered a social thing and not thought of as a dirty habit. However after seeing the effects of smoking many have chose to quit. Banning smoking is replacing the smoking socialization factor of fifty years ago, the new trend is healthy and no one should expect this new trend to go anywhere any time soon.</p>

In 2006 Mississippi was the first state to have 30% obesity among its population according to WebMd.com, it also has a high rate of poverty. USA Today also explains, poverty areas are generally unsafe which discourage children from playing outside, have few grocery stores which offer fruits and vegetables, and many housing developments in these areas are not built with sidewalks for exercise. All of these problems contribute to obesity, the poor are set up to fail to achieve a healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p> Grocery shopping on than $18.00 a day for a family of four is already near impossible but if you want to eat right and be healthy, this task is impossible. This is the challenge families on food stamps are confronted with daily. A needy family of four can get up to $542.00 a month in food stamp assistance according to fns.usda.gov. Being a smart shopper is key when on this kind of budget. The protocol many poor adults follow is this, buy whatever is on sale, use coupons, buy in bulk and get as much generic as possible. What is not figured into this equation is healthy foods and fresh produce.</p>
<p> The typical American family of four spends roughly $600.00 per month on food and more if the foods are organic, low fat, soy based or trans fat free. For an impoverished family, they need to stay within their allotted amount, and this means buying less healthy items and buying in bulk. For example, Ramen noodles are about ten cents a package which means a child can have one a day for a month for around $3.00. However not all that glitters is gold, one package of Ramen is equal to two servings. Each serving has 194 calories in it and 1960 mg of sodium (82% of our daily value). Many food stamp shoppers also shy away from buying fresh product because if not eaten right away it can go bad which means wasted money. So instead they buy fruit snacks packed with sugar, pasta, rice, tacos and greasy chips. These are all things which can be bough for cheap and on a food stamp program, however it is not helping the family to be healthy.</p>
<p> Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and his wife decided to try and raise awareness about hunger and poverty. So they tried living on $21.00 a week (the food stamp budget in Oregon for a family of two). The governor quickly realized he would have to learn to do without organic foods, Swiss cheese, and one of his favorite lunch items low sodium Progresso soups. He quickly said yes though to Cup O&#8217;Noodles, generic peanut butter and half a banana. Workers from the Department of Health and Human Services offered him some advice to living on food stamps, look for low cost staple items. Some suggestions were, Ramen, macaroni and cheese, beans and rice. All of which were far from healthy choices.</p>
<p> The Federal Nutrition Assistance Program does its best to educate food stamp receivers on healthy living and nutrition but sadly they do not give more money to families to buy healthier items. One of the few ways families in poverty can get healthy meals is through the free lunch/breakfast programs in schools. For children who qualify, they will get a healthy lunch and/or breakfast due to the recent changes to school menus.</p>
<p> The obesity epidemic is out of control as is the poverty level. It is difficult to fix one without fixing the other. Each problem also snowballs into other problems such as healthcare costs, disability cases, and unemployment. Obesity is not just one problem requiring a solution, it is a whole mess of problems which need multiple solutions.</p>
