Let’s start with a bit of good old-fashioned straight talking. We can offer you tips to stop smoking but nobody can guarantee you an easy ride. You’re just not going to succeed. Nicotine is a seriously hard drug and it’s not going to let you off easy. If you’re in two minds about it then find a real good reason to quit. If you’ve got kids you might try this one: how would you like them to watch you die?

2. Make a date. Make an appointment with yourself for the day you’re going to stop smoking. Mark it on the calendar. Tell people about it. Build up to it like it’s a special holiday. Do it on your birthday, wedding anniversary, Christmas, son or daughter’s birthday - find a significant, memorable so you can make quitting smoking a celebration. Try not to make it the day you’re going on holiday though - that’s a bit too much pressure to put yourself under! Me, I quit on New Year, at the end of the evening (not the start, you’ll notice, I did have a few cigarettes during the evening). I started New Year’s Day as a non-smoker - and I’ve never touched another.

3. Do some research into the best way to quit smoking for you - the way you feel comfortable with. Some people can quit cold-turkey but that’s real tough and you need a strong will.
